LAYTONSVILLE, Md. – Ruppert Landscape has promoted Steve Faber to the position of regional manager in the company’s landscape management division. Additionally, Kurt Myers and Michael Vispi have been promoted to the position of branch manager.

As region manager, Faber will oversee operations in the Lilburn and Mableton, Georgia branches. He has been with Ruppert for more than 17 years and has a combined 25 years of industry experience. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and is a board member for the Georgia Green Industry Association. Over the course of his Ruppert career, he has held several positions including field manager, area manager, and most recently, branch manager in Lilburn. For the past year, he has also taken on the role of acting branch manager in Mableton while training the next generation of leadership. In 2011, he earned the company’s Clyde Vadner Merit Award, presented to the individual who has demonstrated consistent hard work and dedication leading to exceptional contributions to the organization. He currently resides in Athens with his wife, Cheri, and their children, Dorie, Ethan, and Claire.

“Steve has played a pivotal role in helping us establish a strong reputation in the Atlanta market. Without the benefit of acquisition, Steve and his team built the Lilburn branch from the ground up. The levels of success they achieved has enabled us to split the branch, which resulted in the opening of our Mableton branch in 2015 and the establishment of a satellite operation in Athens,” said Fred Key, region vice president. “We know he will continue to build strong teams and long-lasting customer relationships in his new role.”

Myers has been selected to oversee the Mableton, Georgia landscape management branch. He holds an associate degree in horticultural science from Gwinnett Technical College and has been with Ruppert for more than 12 years. He joined Ruppert in 2007 as an enhancement field manager in the Lilburn, Georgia branch, and was soon promoted to enhancement manager then area manager and transferred to the Mableton branch. In 2018, he was chosen to join the associate branch manager leadership training program. He was twice awarded with the company’s Branch Impact Award, which is presented to the employee whose outstanding dedication and contribution have made a positive impact on the organization. He currently resides in Monroe, Georgia with his wife, Rachael, and their two children, Christopher and Madison.

“Kurt’s confident can-do attitude has helped us build a strong, motivated team in the Mableton branch,” said Faber. “He is a pleasure to work with and I have every confidence in his ability to lead and grow the Mableton branch.”

Vispi has been selected to oversee the Lilburn, Georgia landscape management branch, replacing Steve Faber as he takes on his new role. He holds a bachelor’s degree in landscape contracting from Mississippi State University and has been with Ruppert for over 15 years. Michael first started in 1996 as an intern, then officially joined Ruppert as a field manager in the Lilburn branch the following year. He was since promoted to area manager and was accepted into the associate branch manager leadership training program in 2018. He was twice awarded with the company’s Branch Impact Award. He currently resides in Buford, Georgia with his wife, Sheree, and their children, Ashley, Austin, and Alyssa.

“Those who have met Michael can’t help but appreciate his bubbly personality and great heart, but most importantly his sincere passion for our industry, our customers and our employees,” said Faber. “These, above all others, are the traits that will serve him well in his new position.”

As branch managers, Vispi and Myers will be responsible for the overall welfare of their branch, including the safety and development of the team, strategic planning and budgeting, training, and day-to-day operations.

Google has rolled out a host of updates to its search product. The updates are designed to make visual information more useful as pictures and video become more central to the Internet experience.

The new features showing up in searches include introductory videos about public figures, topic videos to help users plan trips or learn about new subjects, and an overhaul of its ranking system for displaying image-based searches, offering users more context and easier ways to shop online.

Businesses can leverage these changes to their benefit by integrating photos, videos, online reviews and more into Google’s “My Business” page.

Posting through Google My Business lets you publish your events, products, and services directly to Google Search and Maps. By creating posts, you can place your timely text, video, or photo content in front of customers when they find your business listing on Google.

Your business profile appears right when people are searching for your business or businesses like yours on Google Search and Maps. Creating a Google My Business (www.google.com/ business) page is free, and you can update your Business Profile with it so you can stand out and bring customers in.

Once you set it up, you can learn how customers are interacting with your Business Profile. How did people find you? Where are they coming from? It’s similar to Google Analytics, but tailored to your specific business. It’s also designed to be much less overwhelming. While many data scientists are devoted to analytics’ ability to handle any deep dive, the sheer amount of variables involved is enough to frustrate those without a statistics degree.

Google My Business also gives you the tools to build a website for your company, for free, in less than 10 minutes. The free website builder makes it easy to create and edit your site from your computer and phone. Google handles the optimization, ensuring your new site will look great on any screen, from desktops to tablets and phones. By doing it Google’s way, you might be losing a bit of your own autonomy, but the tradeoff might be worth it. All of the sites set up through Google My Business are designed to drive customer actions, using Google’s other services, like Maps to help people find you, and AdWords, Google’s online advertising platform that aims to turn searches into sales.

Backyard lights are attractive addition to many homes. It usually consists of low voltage components, placed in the model and to the extent that you prefer it. These low voltage components are connected to and powered by the electrical system of the home with the help of a transformer, which reduces the power of the current to the necessary level. Low-voltage outdoor lighting components are water resistant, and the amount of energy they use makes them harmless. The lighting installation process of your own backyard requires a little electrical skill and some basic DIY tools.

Draw a plan for backyard lights according to the areas you want to light up and the most direct route of the cables. Remember to take into account that you need a place to install each device, the wiring it requires and a transformer to power the entire installation. Calculate the transformer size you need by adding the power requirements for each light you are going to install and then add 25 percent.

Install your backyard lights transformer first. The transformer operates on a standard of 120 volts of energy, as provided by the household electrical system. Install the transformer in a place outside the house, where it will be out of sight, but easily accessible and convenient for the operation of low voltage cables. Each make and model of the transformer will have specific installation and connection instructions that are included with the packaging.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. – While addressing the crowd during the opening ceremonies of the National Collegiate Landscape Competition, Andrew Ziehler told the students in the audience a valuable lesson he learned from starting a business from scratch.

He said in the early years of owning his company, Ziehler Lawn and Tree Care near Columbus, Ohio, he was always concerned about keeping information from his competition, but learned that wasn’t the correct way to operate.

“Never do that,” he said. “This industry is built on sharing.”

The NCLC is hosted by the National Association of Landscape Professionals and took place at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado.

More than 60 schools and 800 students take part in the competition, which features competitive events in hardscape projects, plant identification, business management and more.

Along with the competition, there is a career fair and the presentation of more than $100,000 in scholarship donations from landscaping and lawn care companies and industry equipment manufacturers.

Students visit booths during the NCLC annual career fair. The event runs until Saturday.

One of those scholarship winners echoed Ziehler’s lesson about helping the industry succeed as a whole.

Alyssa Brown, who received $2,500 from John Deere, said one of her favorite parts of the event is talking to those she is competing against each year and learning from them.

“We all succeed when one of us succeeds,” said Brown, who is a senior at BYU majoring in Landscape Management and planning to pursue a graduate degree in Environmental Science. “We progress as an industry.”

This is the fourth year for Brown participating in the event and she is the team captain of the BYU team. She said that she enjoys seeing how the industry continues to give back to the students.

“Our industry has a big sense of community,” she said

Another theme commonly heard at the event was the continued push to show that the green industry is a place for a successful career and not just a summer job.

Roger Phelps, corporate communications manager at STIHL, the platinum sponsor at the event, said students are seeing the potential in the industry more and more each year, but that’s not the case with parents and high schools.

“It’s most important to show a career ladder to parents and guidance counselors,” he said.

That career ladder is important to the students, but they have more of an immediate focus when it comes to joining a company.

“They want to know – what am I going to be doing when I get out of college?” he said.

Ivan Giraldo, CEO of Austin, Texas-based Clean Scapes, said he heard a lot of students talking about being good stewards for the environment.

He sees that an opportunity for the industry to communicate that the green industry isn’t part of the problem but instead part of the solution.

“We need to keep explaining what our industry can do for the environment,” he said.

The event ends Saturdays with final results being released next week.
